Should I purchase a glass or tiled roof?
We would hesitate to say until we have an idea of how you’d like to use the space, what direction it faces and what your budget is. We can guess that you will want lots of brightness inside and a nice view of your garden, and you will get it with our advanced solar control glazing – don’t worry about that.
A solid tiled roof should come into the mix if you’re wanting to get a true year-round space, particularly as it will easily accommodate full length glass panels or Velux windows. This type of design will give you something of a combination of a solid and glass roof.

Will I need to replace my frames as well?
It would seem logical to have your window frames updated at the same time as having a brand-new conservatory roof put in so that you get optimum thermal efficiency and the full benefits of the roof covering.
The last thing you want is for the new roof to be nowhere near as effective as it should be because you have remained loyal to your draughty old frames. We can package everything up together and give you a fantastic price for a proper upgrade.
MORE COMMON QUESTIONS
Crystal Clear can answer all your questions about our replacement roofs. For your convenience, here are some common questions that our advisors are often asked.
What is a replacement tiled roof made of?
Just so you know, we prefabricate the bulk of the replacement solid tiled roof to make the installation quick and easy to do and so that minimal disruption is caused at your property. It will be made bespoke so that it fits the dimensions of your conservatory.
The system consists of a pre-engineered lightweight frame, insulating panels, insulated fire-grade plasterboard, exterior grade plywood and impenetrable membrane. Finish it with our stunning tiles and have solid panels added if you want to help the roof look at home with the rest of your property.
What is a Clad over roof?
Weight: The heaviness of a clad over system is often too much for existing frames as it has heavy timber, insulation materials and tiles, when what you need is a lightweight roof. The lightest solid roof systems weigh around 31KG/M ².
Tip: Always ask your installer for the total unit weight of the new roof per Sq.M
Fire Safety: A ‘clad over’ system will not comply with current fire safety regulations as it won’t have been effectively fire tested as a complete roof structure, which it needs to be to meet the relevant part of building regulations. It may be that only individual components have been adequately fire tested. Solid roofs must be classified as AC, AB, or AA in accordance with BS476-3.
Tip: Don’t commit to anything until you have been given sight of the fire safety certificate for the roof.
Building Regulations: It’s also unlikely that a clad over system will be granted Building Regulations Approval because of its poor thermal value and lack of structural integrity. This is NOT the same as planning permission, which often isn’t needed. Your local Building Control needs to be informed if you are making any structural changes, which includes replacing a polycarbonate or glass conservatory roof, so they can check it is structurally sound.
Tip: The conversion shouldn’t start before Building Control knows of your plans. The Building Regulations ‘Final’ Certificate needs to be kept safe.
Will my conservatory still get too hot and too cold?
That’s what a new replacement roof from Crystal Clear will stop happening. Unlike it did when it had an old polycarbonate roof, you won’t feel the temperature rapidly increase in summer and become like a greenhouse. Solar control glazing is so far advanced nowadays, but if it’s an extension for all weathers that you want, a tiled roof will be your best bet.
What exactly are ‘A’ rated windows?
According to the BFRC Rating Scheme, the UK’s national system for rating the energy efficiency level of modern replacement windows, ‘A’ rated windows are the most energy efficient windows currently available in the UK. This rating tells you if a set of windows comply with Building Regulations or not.
The traffic-light system used to rate the energy efficiency of windows from A- E is very similar to the system used to do the same for ‘white’ goods e.g., washing machines, fridges, freezers.
Energy ratings are there to let you know exactly what you’re buying so that you get your money’s worth out of your investment.
How much will a roof replacement cost?
The cost of a small conservatory roof will be in the range of £5,000+ with a large conservatory roof likely to cost about £12,000+. You can always rely on finance to help you secure a new roof and spread the cost of it. Give our finance calculator a go if you want to uncover a suitable payment plan.
How long will the installation of the roof take?
We can have a solid tiled roof fitted in a matter of days, so you won’t have to put up with too much disruption at home.
Will planning permission be needed for a replacement roof?
Although you won’t need planning permission to change your roof, Building Regulation Control will be mandatory as you will need evidence of it when you come to sell your house.
What about Building Regulations Approval, is that required?
Once you have been given Building Regulations Approval by your local authority, it confirms that the new roofing system has been deemed fit by a government approved building control inspector and they are satisfied that it has been correctly fitted, is structurally safe and thermally efficient. It will also avoid you experiencing any problems when you’re trying to sell your property.
