Should You Choose Composite Or UPVC For Your Next Front Door?

Should You Choose Composite Or UPVC For Your Next Front Door?

There are two key reasons that make your front door one of the most important features of your home.

First impressions can guide a visitor’s overall impression of your home and the front door is likely the first feature of your home that is seen. A front door’s visual appeal as well as its ability to keep your home secure make it a vital part of your property.

It is time to think about replacing your front door if you feel that it is not living up to your expectations of either of these aspects and two of the best options for your consideration are composite doors and UPVC doors.

While many people are well aware of UPVC doors which consist of a steel frame covered in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride, some might not be as informed about composite doors.

What is a composite door made of?

Fabricators take several different materials including uPVC, wood, foam and a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin and combine them to create composite doors.

While the GRP skin can give composite doors the illusion of a traditional timber door, their performance is much different. Composite doors have far better watertight and durability qualities than a timber door ever could.

Strength is one of composite doors’ best qualities and Crystal Clear’s composite doors are constructed to be as tough and thermally efficient as any you will find on the market.

The different components of a composite door

What makes a composite door different from a UPVC door?

The main difference in their construction is that UPVC doors are crafted solely with plastic, whereas composite doors utilise several materials. UPVC doors tend to be quite slimmer when compared to composite doors because of their construction.

Because UPVC doors require less materials to construct, they also have a lower price point than composite doors.

While UPVC doors do cost less than composite doors, it does not necessarily mean they are a lesser product as they also have exceptional security and thermal efficiency.

What are some tips for cleaning and maintaining UPVC or composite doors?

In order to keep your door looking its best, you can clean it with a simple solution of warm soapy water and wipe it down once every four months – remember to avoid using abrasive materials or solvent based cleaners which can damage your door.

Set a yearly reminder to lubricate the locks, hinges, door furniture and handles to keep your door operating smoothly.

In order to keep water from entering the seals, the threshold and drainage holes should be checked regularly and kept free of debris especially in periods of wet and windy weather.
