Is Planning Permission Required For A Solid Roof?

If you have a fairly old conservatory or orangery, you may have found that it’s starting to get too cold to use, which is annoying, to say the least! 

Just think. You could be hosting the Christmas dinner in it and have party games afterwards with all your loved ones, but at present, it will probably just sit totally empty – a literal waste of space. 

There is a product in our range that could solve this problem – a solid roof. 

However, before getting a solid roof installed to take over from your current roof, you need to find out whether planning permission is necessary first. 

In some instances, a solid tiled roof will meet Permitted Development Rights, and when it does, no application for planning permission is required. 

To uncover whether Permitted Development Rights apply or not and where you stand with the installation, get in contact with the planning department at your local authority. 

What’s really important to know is that planning permission isn’t the same thing as being granted with building regulations approval. 

Building regulations approval is often needed for solid roof installations and you’re more likely to be given it if you use an approved roofing system, such as the UltraRoof 380.

Because we have fitted so many solid roofs, we usually have a good idea of whether planning permission and / or building regulations approval will be required. 

Prior to any solid roof installation, we will also check to ensure that your conservatory or orangery has the structural integrity needed to hold a new roof. We can always replace the current windows and doors if that doesn’t prove to be the case, but solid roofs are very lightweight, so it should be OK.
