3 Home Improvement Ideas To Help A Small Home Feel Spacious

3 home improvement ideas for smaller homes

Have you noticed that houses are getting smaller and smaller? No, it’s not your eyes deceiving you. Over the last 40 years, the average size of a new-build property in the UK has decreased in size by 20%.

Why have they shrunk in size? It’s because of two main reasons, the first of which is because it makes them cheaper to build, and the second is because it enables developers to build more of them.

Do you live in a rather small home and wish you could somehow make it feel roomier inside?

We suggest that you declutter the place, and then employ these 3 clever strategies:

Hang up mirrors in rooms

One surefire way of creating the illusion of space in rooms is to hang up some mirrors on the walls. Not just any mirrors and not just anywhere though.

No, they need to be the right size. Your best bet is to use large mirrors with small frame surrounds. They also need to be positioned near a window, if that’s possible.

When installing any mirrors, you want the centre of them to be at the eye-level of an average-sized person for them to have the necessary impact.

Change to a light colour scheme

Employing a light colour scheme around your house will help to reflect the natural light of the sun, a tactic known to enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

It could see you repaint your rooms in a brilliant white finish, or if that’s a bit too safe for your liking, try an off-white shade as an alternative.

Don’t stop at the walls when repainting. Coat any trims, doors and the ceiling with the colour too.

Get bi-folds, French or patio doors fitted

If you don’t have enough space indoors and you have a back garden, you could always get bi-folding, French or patio doors installed so that you can open the interior.

It will feel substantially bigger each time that the doors are either fully or partially closed, and some of that will be down to the sun pouring into the house.

Shutting the doors closed won’t stop this from happening as bi-folds, French and patio doors all have vast glass expanses, so the sun will still sufficiently sneak through.
